Book Excerpts

On growing up:

“The atmosphere at home was dominated by the volatile relationship between my mother and Ray. Their conflicts were often explosive, filled with screaming arguments and intense anger.

…It was often an oppressive, angry, unhappy atmosphere…and I resented being a casualty, trapped in the crossfire of their volatile marriage.”

On my first startup’s failure:

“Having spent two to three years desperately trying to make this publication succeed, I was both physically and mentally drained, exhausted by my lack of success and Ray’s verbal attacks.

…I had to accept the fact that this was my failure. This experience was a huge, bitter pill I had to swallow.”

On the comeback, finding the road to redemption:

“… I had just enough funds for the one-time mailing campaign promoting our subscription offer to our customer list. If this attempt failed, I’d be flat broke and looking for the first job I could find.

I’ll always remember the day I returned from a trip, opened my mailbox, and found it stuffed with subscription checks from pharmaceutical giants like Merck, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, etc. Our daring leap of faith had worked!”

On selling my company:

“IVT was more than just a business to me. Each decision made, obstacle overcome, success achieved, and relationship built was a mirror reflecting my values, aspirations, and dedication. It became synonymous with who I was. In every essence, IVT was me, and I realized I had relinquished more than just a company. I had sold a piece of my identity.

What have I just done?
